Local Government
The City of Clinton operates as a code charter form of government. This method divides the city equally into six wards. The local governing body is comprised of the mayor, one alderman representing each of the six wards, and one alderman-at-large whose duty is to represent the entire community.
Clinton Police Department
Rated among the best in the state, the Clinton Police Department enjoys an outstanding relationship with the citizens of Clinton based on old-fashioned courtesy and modern standards. One standard particularly appreciated is the commitment to respond to emergency calls within three minutes or less. The Clinton Police Department is comprised of 49 officers, 12 dispatchers, four investigators, two record clerks, one animal warden, six crossing guards, and 16 reserve officers. The Police Department has recently updated its computer and communications system with the latest state-of-the-art equipment.
Clinton Fire Department
The Clinton Fire Department has a Class 5 fire rating and a staff of over 60, comprised of 49 full-time firefighters/EMTs and 12 part-time paramedics. It is one of the few fire departments in the state that maintains advanced life support on its rescue unit. Three fire stations presently serve the citizens of Clinton, and areas of operation include administrative, public education, safety/training, fire marshal, fire suppression, and hazardous material incidents management. The mission of the Clinton Fire Department is to serve the citizens of Clinton in a professional, caring, compassionate manner.
A.E. Wood Memorial Library
New residents are welcome at the City of Clinton’s public library, A.E. Wood Memorial on Clinton Boulevard. The mission of the library is to provide quality information services in a variety of formats to meet the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of its patrons. The library’s book collection consists of over 50,000 items, over 100 current periodicals, and a large number of major newspapers, including the Sunday New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Special programs include pre-school story hour, summer reading program, and a wide variety of adult programs for the educational and cultural enrichment of the community.
The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm, Friday 9 am to 6 pm, and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. For more information, call (601) 924-5684.
